BUILT is a progress photo app. Your photos are yours. This page explains exactly what leaves your phone and why.
Your progress photos
Photos you take or add in BUILT are stored on your iPhone. If iCloud is on, they are backed up to your own private iCloud account, which we cannot access. Lining photos up and matching the light all happens on your phone.
Your photo library
BUILT never asks for access to your photo library. To add older photos, you pick them in Apple's own photo picker, and BUILT only ever receives the photos you pick. Nothing from your library is uploaded. If you choose "Save to Camera Roll", BUILT asks for permission to add photos only, which doesn't let it see your library.
AI goal preview
If you ask for a goal preview, your Day 1 photo and the answers you gave (goal, how big a change, sex, training experience, age, height, weight and any tweak notes) are sent to our server, which asks OpenAI's image model to create the preview and sends it back to your phone.
- We do not store your photo or the preview on our servers.
- OpenAI may keep the request for up to 30 days to check for abuse, then deletes it. It is not used to train their models.
- The preview itself is saved only on your phone.
App Attest
BUILT uses Apple's App Attest to prove that requests to our AI goal server come from the real BUILT app. For that, a random key ID created on your phone is stored on our server. It isn't linked to you, your Apple ID or your photos.
Analytics
We use Amplitude to understand how the app is used (for example, which screens are viewed and whether a photo was added). Events are tied to a random device identifier, not your name, email or Apple ID. They never include photos or body measurements. The first time the app opens, it also tells our server once so we can count installs; that message carries no identifier.
Crash diagnostics
If the app crashes, Apple's MetricKit gives BUILT an anonymous crash report the next time you open it, and the app sends it to our server so we can fix the bug. It contains the app version, iOS version, device model and technical crash details. It never includes photos or personal information.
Problem reports
If you send a report from Settings → Report a problem, we receive your message, your email and a screenshot if you add them, plus the app and iOS version, device model, the random device identifier, how many photos and check-ins you have, and whether you have Pro. We use it only to answer you and fix the problem.
Subscriptions
Payments are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. We use Superwall to show subscription offers, which receives an anonymous app user ID and purchase events.
Face ID, notifications and widgets
Face ID is handled by Apple; we never see your face data. Reminders are scheduled on your phone. Widgets only show photos if you turn that on, and never when the Face ID lock is on.
What we don't do
We don't sell your data, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Deleting your data
Settings → "Delete all my photos" removes every photo from your phone and your iCloud backup. Deleting the app removes everything else stored on your phone. To delete analytics data or a problem report, email us with the subject "Delete my data".
Children
BUILT is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
